Description & Use: This blend is used widely in Chinese and Vietnamese cuisine but its exact origins are unknown.  Some claim that the blend of sweeter spices with the heat of Sichuan pepper represents the contrast between ying and yang.

Our Chinese five spice combines the classic ingredients of star anise, cassia bark, fennel seeds, cloves and Sichuan pepper. The dominant liquorice flavour of the star anise in this blend lends itself really well to fattier cuts of meat such as duck and pork belly but it works equally well as a rub for lean cuts of beef in a pot roast or added to a stir fry.  Mixed with soy or hoisin sauce and honey, it makes a delicious sticky barbeque sauce for pork ribs, chicken or seafood.

All Pinch spice blends are hand-blended in small batches in our kitchen by the sea in Sussex.
