A member of the capsicum frutescens species of chilli is likely to have originated from Central and South America. It was spread around the world by the Spanish and Portuguese and is now a popular ingredient in Southeast Asian, African, Spanish, and Portuguese cooking. Although small in size, this chilli packs a real punch – it can score well over 100,000 on the Scoville heat scale.
