Description & Use: Organic Panch Phoron (Bengali Five Spice), is also known as panch pharan, panch pora and other similar variations. It is a blend of five seeds used widely in Bengali cooking. The name is a direct translation of a Hindustani phrase meaning 'five spices'.
Panch phoron is added to hot oil or ghee until the seeds pop and release their flavour into the oil at the start of cooking and before other ingredients are added. For that reason our organic panch phoron is neither toasted nor ground but simply combined to provide you with the perfect mix of whole seeds for an authentic Bengali taste. Try adding onions and garlic to hot oil flavoured with a couple of teaspoons of panch phoron, then add cubed, par-boiled potatoes and cook until the potatoes are golden brown for a classic, flavoursome side dish to accompany a curry.
All Pinch spice blends are hand blended in small batches in our own kitchen in Hove.
